A GLANCE TO OUR PAST........

The Indian School of Mines (ISM) was established by the government of India in 1926 on the pattern of Royal School of Mines, London which now belongs to Imperial College of Science Technology and Medicine, London.

It caters to the human resource needs of India in the areas of mining engineering, petroleum engineering, mining machinery, mineral engineering and the earth sciences besides training manpower in related disciplines of management, electronics & instrumentation, environmental sciences and applied sciences. In due recognition of its vital role in service of the Nation, ISM was granted autonomy by the government of India in 1967, and since then, it has been functioning as a deemed university under the University Grants Commission Act, 1956.

WHERE TO FIND US....

ISM is situated at a distance of about three kilometers to the north of Dhanbad Railway Station on the Grand Chord Line of the Eastern Railways. The altitude of the place is 212 m above MSL, the average rainfall is around 148 cm. The maximum and minimum temperature in a year will be around 40o and 7oC respectively. ISM campus covers an area of about 88 hectares. The locational advantage of ISM at Dhanbad is that it is situated at the core of the industrial base of the region which hosts a number of coal mines, steel, fertilizer, refractories, heavy machine building plants, etc.
